What I love most about being back at work after maternity leave

IMG_0931

I’ve been back at work for about 2 months now and it’s incredible to see how much Aidan has developed in such a short time. When I get home some evenings and he greets me with his gorgeous smile, he just looks so much older than he did the day before. He’s already mastered 2 new skills within these few weeks – sitting by himself for a few seconds and rolling over from his back on to his tummy.

So yes, I am definitely missing out on special moments with him but I must admit it … I am actually enjoying being back at the office and these are the reasons why:

1. Dressing Up

It’s amazing how a suit can make you feel. I’ve always loved dressing up for work, especially in Winter. Coats, boots and scarves are just the best pick-me-up! Instead of spending hours in my onesie pj’s and track pants which isn’t bad either but it does get a bit much after a while and I know for sure my husband didn’t enjoy seeing me in my favorite onesie day and night!

2. I get to drink a hot cup of coffee

It’s just so awesome to be able to make me a cup of coffee just about whenever I want to and not have to re-heat it over and over again. I can just enjoy it while it’s piping hot, just the way I like it.

3. Work feels like me time

I know this doesn’t sound right… The very thing which has to pay the bills should never be considered “me time” but going out to lunch and actually getting to eat (in peace), being able to use the toilet in peace and have adult conversations is really a breath of fresh air!

4. My brain is working

I literally felt like I woke up from a coma when I walked into the office for the first time but weeks in I can actually feel this porridge brain of mine put the pieces back together. Everything has slowly come back to me and it feels good!

5. TGIF

I love the countdown to Friday! On Fridays we have our team meeting and it’s great to see what we’ve achieved for the week and it just makes me enjoy my weekend so much more.

However as Friday afternoon approaches, I cannot wait to get home to my gorgeous little family for Friday burger or pizza nights and to spend quality time with them over the weekend 🙂

I have to admit that I also love to work and every time returning after maternity leave was mostly good. (not always, but mostly)

If I had a choice I would love to be at home with my baby, but as you say going to work has its “perks”. I can relate to all your points (especially having a cup of coffee), but I get very excited to go home in the afternoons, looking forward to see my baby. I think being away during the day make the times we have together a bit more special and I don’t take it for granted.

The idea of ME time really does get redefined as we become parents – a trip to Spar on my own is me time, sitting on the own in my car in the parking lot is me time 🙂

I miss work sometimes but not sure how well I would integrate back into the working world now!
