December is here and the festive season has seriously begun in our household. We put up our tree on Friday evening and the kids were literally bursting with excitement as they hung their little ornaments.

The festive spirit is continuing all weekend with concerts and get-togethers, which is what this time of year is about really! My kids love cakes and cookies, so it’s natural for them to associate it with good times like these. For many children in South Africa, life is tough. And when I say tough, I mean they have to live in an environment of persasive violence. This violence alters the very fabric of their childhood.

The Child Protection Office at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital sees an average of 40 to 50 cases child abuse every single month. That’s close to (or in many cases over) 600 cases a year. 600 stories of empty childhoods.
