The countdown to Mothers Day has begun and what better time to recharge our batteries. As Mother’s we often put our own needs very last on the long list of priorities, but it should actually be first on that list!
If Mom is feeling down in the dumps, the rest of the family will find it hard to cope – so by taking care of yourself, you are actually looking out for the needs of your family.
Happy Mom = Happy Family!
Often we don’t even know how to relax and unwind anymore. Once we have kids the focus is all on them and giving them the best, and we tend to neglect ourselves.
In light of Mothers day – let’s do ourselves a favour and try to focus on our own well-being for a bit! I’ve got a list of ways to help us do just that!
Mani’s, Pedi’s and massages are great – these are a real treat but is not always in the budget. You don’t need to go out and pay a lot in order to be pampered!
Not too long ago, I bought a yoga bath bomb for less than R69. After the kids went to bed, I relaxed and enjoyed a long bath before getting into bed. It was a real treat and I slept so well that night!
You could also paint your own nails, do a face mask or even ask your partner for a back rub! (Yes – sometimes all you have to do is ask…)
There are some people who just can’t do anything alone. I’ve never been that kind of person. I could sit in a coffee shop alone, workout alone and even see a movie in the cinema by myself!
I love doing things on my own and it’s actually one less thing to worry about, i.e. not always looking for a partner to do things with.
It’s actually very healthy to spend time with yourself and gather your thoughts!
Chat to a friend
While spending time alone is good, we also need to have good, quality conversations with like-minded people who are there to support you.
Someone outside of your home environment, where you don’t only chat about the kids and household stuff – is a great way for you to really unwind and also listen to someone else and what’s happening in their world for a change!
Visit their home, meet at a coffee shop or even just a trip to the park! It will do wonders for both of you!
Exercise and eat healthy foods
Diet and exercise are so important for us Mom’s. The healthier we are, the better our ability to function and be on our toes for our kids!
Children also mirror what we do, so by following a good diet and doing regular exercise will encourage them to do the same.
If your baby is very young, a daily walk around the block in the stroller is the perfect way to start!
Something I really need to work on is to get more sleep. 7-8 hours of rest every night is what the body needs to function at its best. It’s difficult to do so when your baby wakes up during the night, but we should try to squeeze in our shut-eye, somehow.
If I don’t sleep enough, my body gets run down and then I tend to get sick really easily. This is my body’s way of telling me to rest!
