We are halfway through the year, Winter is in full swing and the kids are enjoying a lovely long break from school – so what better time for an escape out of the busy city?
Just in time, Bluegum Country Estate invited us to stay over for a relaxing country experience. The luxury guest house accommodation in Stanford is approximately 2 hours from Cape Town, making it a great road trip destination for families with rather impatient little ones like mine!
We were really excited to head this way as it’s the first time that the kids got to explore this part of the province. Kurt and I visited Stanford a couple of times before the kids were born, so it was also a bit of a trip down memory lane for us. We find the little town the perfect place to relax and unwind in nature, so we were excited to show the kids around.
When we arrived at Blue Gum Country Estate, we were greeted by a herd of cows grazing the beautiful fields of the estate, so we knew we were at the right place.
Once we checked in and were shown to our room, Alyssa was ready to unpack and relax in luxury, while Aidan was ready to explore the beautiful gardens and kiddies play area, which he spotted on the walk to our room!
We stayed in a regular Mountain View Cottage which is situated close to the restaurant and kids play area (up Aidan’s alley). Our unit had a King-size bed but was spacious enough to accommodate extra mattresses for Aidan and Alyssa. There are however bigger family units, manor house suites and honeymoon suites available on the estate.
But as Aidan likes to say – “nice and cosy” is what we opted for.
Eventually, these two compromised. Aidan gave Alyssa some time to chill and play just outside our room, followed by a walk to the play area where they could go wild! We also spotted a tennis court, which is great for the older kids and adults!
We loved exploring the estate and talking to the cows!
The mornings were cold and fresh, but it really felt so good to just breath in that pure fresh air.
We really enjoyed the food!
There are 2 sections to the restaurant on the estate. One catering for families and informal get-togethers. It is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner; while there is also a more formal option “The Blue Gum Restaurant” which is open for dinner and caters to adults only – both serve the same menu.
Breakfast was really good and so was Dinner. We opted for room service for our Dinner (which is just so much easier with the kids ha ha) but we really enjoyed our meals!
The restaurant, however, is absolutely gorgeous…
As a family, we really enjoyed our time at Bluegum Country Estate as well as exploring Stanford – and I think we’ll be back for many more family holidays in the future.
