What to do in Cape Town this school holidays

winter school holidays

Can you believe we are half way through the 2022 school year?

Winter school holidays always seem like it’s the longest and hardest to keep the kids busy and it’s probably because we are mostly stuck indoors thanks to the cold and rainy weather.

Thankfully, there are some great events and venues that have some great ideas and things to keep the kids occupied and entertained this school holidays.

Moms and Dads, I’ve done you a little favour – I’ve rounded up a list of whats happening in and around Cape Town this school holidays to help you plan the next few weeks ahead.

What to do in Cape Town the Winter school holidays

Peter Pan at Canal Walk Theatre

A special treat is in store for Capetonians, as the much-loved story of Peter Pan will be recreated on stage at the Canal Walk Winter Theatre taking place between 25 June and 17 July 2022.  This marks a welcome return of the centre’s annual children’s theatre run, interrupted for the past two years due to a succession of pandemic-related lockdowns and stringent social distancing measures.

In this 2022 magical musical adaption of JM Barrie’s adored classic tale, Peter, Tinkerbell, and Wendy Darling, along with the incorrigible Captain Hook and his faithful side kick, Smee, will ferry audiences to Never Land to be amazed by all its wonders, allowing imaginations to soar unfettered into the realms of storytelling and enchantment, as the battle between Peter and Captain Hook unfolds all around them.

We attended the opening night this week and I can promise you the kids will love it! Captain Hook is my absolute favourite to watch!

Cape Town Science Centre

We love visiting the Cape Town Science centre (CTSC) and it’s definitely on the kids holiday bucket list yet again!

The CTSC has a jam-packed programme featuring two Holiday Clubs, daily hands-on activities, Science Corner demonstrations, a science show, as well as regular activities such as the Camera Obscura Tours and the AstroTrek Virtual Reality and Light Room exhibition.

Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens Winter Wonders

This Holiday, kids under 17 can enjoy free entry into Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens as part of their #winterwonders campaign.

This is amazing news and such a great outing to enjoy some nature and fresh air!

Also check out the post below as they have an awesome competition running for the holidays!

Bugz Playpark

Bugz Playpark is probably one of Alyssa and Aidan’s favourite places in Cape Town. We have hosted and been to so many parties at Bugz and also just popped in for some playtime a number of times.

They are open Thursdays – Sundays throughout the school holidays, first come first served, so best you get there early if you want to spend the day!

Wonderdal Edutainment Centre

Suited for the ages between 5 and 13, Wonderdal is only 30 minutes from Cape Town and is a fully supervised adventure zone. It combines learning with play together with fantasy and innovation. This fascinating interactive space allows children to journey through the worlds of science and nature while building life skills. Best part is, is that is all in the company of the virtual Amuki characters that call Wonderdal home.

There is also a special winter holiday club between 5-7 July where the kids can have a blast! View the holiday club programme here.

Movie Date to see Lightyear

Disney and Pixar recently released its highly rated film “Lightyear” in South African theatres and we can’t wait to see it!

The movie is said to be a great watch for both parents and children, as it explores the different facets how we as individuals can view the world. Life is never what we plan for and things don’t always go the way we want it.

But this movie is all about not dwelling on the past and wishing that things were different—that seems like a waste of time. The movie teaches both adults and the youth! In spite of bad things and bad decisions that we need to rather focus on doing what is best with where one is right now and making the most of one’s time.

Snow World in Strand

Don’t miss out on Snow World at Waterworld Strand this winter school holidays.

You’ll find great undercover fun for the whole family. Real snow ramps, solid ice slide, snow play and life size ice age animals!

Kids birthday party zone also available… Visit the website for all the information here.
