Are you wanting to read more books as part of your goals for 2023?
Well, if so, you have come to the right place! I absolutely love reading and encouraging others to do so too!
So, I’m sharing ten useful tips to help you read more books this year – and not just read them – but enjoy the books you read too!
Ten Ways You Can Read More This Year
1. Read Books That Actually Interest You!
I don’t think there is anything more painful than reading something that you are just not into. A book may be “trending” but it doesn’t mean that its something that you are going to love. If a book doesn’t interest you after a few chapters in – put it down and try a different book! Don’t let that one book put you off from reading altogether.
It’s like watching a movie where the subject matter is of zero interest to you. You don’t cancel all television, you simply change the channel to something that is of more interest to you.
2. Set A Reading Goal
Setting a reading goal is a good way to hold yourself accountable, if you’re really serious about reading. It doesn’t have to be a ridiculous goal. Set a number that is realistic for you!
I find that every year, I challenge myself to read even more than the previous and that in itself is a motivator to read more. Just two years ago my reading goal was 30 books, this year it’s 50!
3. Always Have A Book On Hand
This is a game changer! You’ll be surprised at all the opportunities you can get to read. A few weeks ago, we had to get some stuff done at Home Affairs and you know how that goes…. I actually finished an entire book on that day!
So when you get your hair done or you have to wait in a long queue at the bank – make sure you have a book with you!
I also always take my book along on weekend outings when Hubby is driving and so do the kids!
4. Read Before You Fall Asleep
You don’t need any special tricks to fall asleep. I promise you – get into bed after a nice warm shower, grab a cup of tea and read a few pages of your book. It’s like a natural sleeping tablet
You will be surprised at how quickly you will fall asleep!
5. Booktok or Bookstagram
This is probably the easiest way to find books that may be of interest to you! Quick reviews and ratings on Instagram and Tiktok will give you some good reading inspo!
You may even make a reading buddy or two!
6. Create a Reading Space
This is one of my home projects for 2023! I want to create the perfect reading nook in our living room. I have a corner in our living room where I love to sit and read but it needs to be spruced up a bit.
Creating your own little reading nook will definitely get you inspired to get through that TBR(To Be Read) pile!
7. Start Small
If a really “thick” book intimidates you, then start with a shorter book or a book or a book of short stories.
I also find that if a book has shorter chapters, I tend to want to read “just another chapter or two” before putting the book down. This way I end up finishing the book a lot quicker!
So, choose your next read wisely!
8. Read more than one book at a time
This is something I love to do.
I love self help books and I always tend to keep one on my desk. I read these a lot slower than other books, as I just read a few pages or a chapter when I get a moment.
While at the same time, I will enjoy a more fun fiction read or a good biography in the evenings before bed and over weekends!
9. Embrace e-books or audio books
This is new territory for me, but it’s actually quite a nice way to get in your reading!
I think the popularity of e-books skyrocketed recently, thanks to listeners of Prince Harry’s Spare audiobook. It’s definitely great to hear the Author speaking his truth, I guess!
I may also need to opt for e-reading pretty soon as I’m running out of space on my book shelf 🙂
10. Download a Reading App
I use the GoodReads app to track my reading and it’s also great for finding book recommendations based on your interests and previous reads.
You can also follow your friends reading journey and encourage each other to get to that reading goal.
So these are my tips! I hope you found these useful and if you have any other tips, drop them in the comments.
