Someone has found the love of reading….
Witnessing Alyssa learning to read over the last year has been the best thing to see. From sounds, to words then sentences – it’s been great to see her getting better and better at it.
Alyssa is also extremely obsessed with animals, especially cute puppies and kittens.
Penguin Books sent her a book titled “The Saddest Kitten” and she was immediately drawn to the cover.
“The Saddest Kitten” by Holly Web
They say don’t judge a book by it’s cover but when you’re a 7 year old girl who’s obsessed with cute little creatures, then it’s hard not to love this one…. and when one of the lead characters has the same name as your Mom – then you’ve really got her attention.
The book is about Isla who loves hanging out at her best friend Hailey’s house, especially as Hailey has just got a gorgeous kitten, Silky!
But someone isn’t so keen on the new arrival -the family’s old cat, Pickle. When Hailey’s family go away for the night, Isla offers to catsit. But to her surprise Silky is more timid than usual. The kitten is clearly terrified of Pickle and Isla has to stop a fight between the two cats.
How can Isla break the news to Hailey that her new kitten is so unhappy?
Alyssa could easily relate to the story as we witnessed our older dog Trevor deal with the arrival of our new puppy Cody.
The book has the cutest illustrations by Sophy Williams which Alyssa can’t stop talking about!
While reading the book, Alyssa’s school had a dress up day where the kids had to dress up as a character in their favourite book.
Alyssa immediately thought of dressing up as “The Saddest Kitten” and I think her outfit turned out pretty cute.
What do you think of Alyssa’s costume? Thankfully the mask came in handy ha ha!
The Saddest Kitten is perfect for 6-9 year olds and retails for about R100 in stores.
